My USMC M39 EMR Clone
The Real Deal Genuine USMC M39 EMR is pictured on my blogsite at the front header page. On this commentary is the break down on what the Armorers built in Quantico, Va. and there is a very good friend of mine who has dialed in or built the civilian version of the USMC M39 EMR to the "T". I am grateful for him to share and take on such a project for all of us to read and enjoy his masterpiece. Don't bother to ask what it costs him cause we all know its an arm, leg, and hopefully not to mention the wife or girl friends issues on this rifle build.
----------
The USMC M39 is built by the Precision Weapons Section(PWS), Weapons Training Battalion, in Quantico, VA. The work involves rebuilding existing M14 DMRs using specific commercial off the shelf(COTS) parts, including some support items, as listed below.
----------
My build was based on an unfired Springfield Armory M1Afrom the early 90's which had GI parts and a TRW bolt/barrel. All parts followed the specified COTS parts with the following exceptions:
a)Barrel - "M14 Medium Pattern. The same contour used by the U.S. Marine Corps. Only available in SS, 1-12 twist. 22" length Weight 2.8#"
As explained by Krieger, the DMR configuration was originally produced to true G.I. spec and supplies have been exhausted. The basic DMR barrel is now offered for commercial sale as the "Medium pattern" with slight changes to the threading (possibly over sized shoulder) to allow for better fitting to non-GI spec, commercial receivers.
b) Scope- Schmidt Bender 3-12x50mm PM II LP Gen 2 Mil Dot MTC DT 'Military' model. Commercial version released following completion of the initial military contracts.
Original Schmidt Bender SSDS was delivered tothe USMC by Premier Reticles to satisfy the contractual issues related to U.S. sourcing as well as their licensed Gen II reticle. Additionally, Premier was involved with retrofitting of the CCW MTC(more tactile clicks) knobs on later models. Contract scopes also came with specific etched markings on the eyepiece housing including"1240-01-533-1854" (NSN number), serial number, "USMC" and "M8541" on top, and "Premier Reticles" replacing "Made in Germany" and a 2-D bar code on the left.
c) Simrad cap - Badger Ordnance limited run duplicating the SPA-Simrad caps which are not available to civilians.

One other note is the Sage ALCS stock. There was a limited run of "USMC"stocks offered by Clyde Armory that were anodized brown and had a tan rather than black full size hand guard. These included upper rails milled to accommodate the SEI 2006 scope mount prior to anodization. Tomy knowledge, this is not the actual stock being utilized for the M39production and may have only been a prototype run.
From all sources and photos/videos located, the correct stock is mechanically the same as the brown Clyde USMC stock and is the most recent (lightened)ALCS stock with the upper milled for the Smith mount, however it is anodized in the (Navy) gray color. SEI indicates that both the black or tan hand guards are correct for the M39, however the few M39's I've located all use the tan hand guard.

As for the stock spacer, this is direct from Sage as the M14BEK. This kit is referenced in a USMC parts solicitation from Feb 2008 that requested 620 of the 'B009056, M14BEK' butt stock extension kits. Again due to the very limited info available on the M39, I cannot say how often this extension is used, however it appears in the tech manual image on the wikipedia entry as well as in a recent photo taken at the Camp Lejeune armory.
M14BEK - Sage M14ALCS buttstock 1" extension kit, incl mounting hardware consisting of p/n 90995 (1), 91734 (2), 90928 (4).
90995 is the 1" milled Aluminum extension which replaces the original 1/8" thick endplate as supplied on the ALCS stocks
91734are the two extended length socket head cap screws which replace the original shorter button head cap screws used to retain the recoil pad
90928are four washers which serve no purpose as I can see with the current Pachmayr recoil pad as they prevent full thread engagement of the screws when used (possibly they're to be used when the older Speed feed recoil pad is in place?).
When I first called Josh and Dave at Sage, they had no idea what part I was asking about and it took several more calls to convince them that the extension and part number were real and that it was something they actually produced. I then spent 2 more months of running around calling Sage and Clyde before Dave at Sage finally agreed to sell me one direct. I believe it was offered in both black and gray (silver) anodization, however Sage only had the black kits available once my purchase opportunity presented itself. After all the hassle, I took what I could get even if it doesn't match the gray anodization of my stock.
As for function, the 1" extension kit does just that, it adds 1" to the length of pull. If extra length of pull is not needed however, it serves two other interesting functions since the stock does not have to be pulled out as far as usual to achieve your desired LOP. Namely, 1) it moves the cheek piece 1" forward so that your cheek is more centered and not on the forward edge, and 2)it moves the angled buttstock piece (in front of the recoil pad, under the cheek piece) forward so that it is easier to grasp with the off hand when using a typical rear supported hold when shooting prone.
