Everybody has seen:

A Diving Board, it is a springing platform, fixed at one end, extended across a Fulcrum and free at the other end. When the free end is forced down it has a tendency to spring back up past the original plane, finally coming to rest where it started..

If you think of your upper M1A assembly in those terms, it is clear the Receiver Heel acts like the free end of a Diving Board when the Rifle is fire. The M1A that has Draw Pressure Bedded into it wants to lift the Heel even when it is at rest.


If the Area in front of the Heel is not cleared of stock material it acts some what as a second Fulcrum, applying even more up pressure. Up pressure at the Heel is not what we are looking for in an accurate M1A.. This is why I like the rear lug with a screw...
